China’s value-added industrial output increased by 5.4% year on year in the first five months of 2026, official data showed. In May alone, industrial output grew 4.5% year on year, and rose 0.40 percent compared to the previous month, according to data released by the National Bureau of Statistics. The industrial output is used to measure the activity of large enterprises each with an annual main business turnover of at least 20 million yuan (about US$2.94 million).
A breakdown of the data showed that the manufacturing sector grew by 5.5% in the first five months. By product, in May, the production of 300 out of 626 kinds of products increased year-on-year. Among them, fabric output increased by 1.2% year-on-year in May to 2.5 billion meters and grew by 3.3% year-on-year from January to May to 11.9 billion meters. And the output of chemical fibers declined by 3.3% year-on-year in May to 6.97 million tons and increased 2.4% year-on-year to 35.08 million tons in the first five months of 2026.
