China’s retail sales of consumer goods, a major indicator of consumption strength, registered faster growth in August after a slowdown lasting three consecutive months, official data showed.
Retail sales went up 4.6% year on year to CNY 3.79 trillion (about US$ 527.96 billion) in August, according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). The growth rate was higher than the 2.5% expansion recorded in July.
In the January-August period, retail sales of consumer goods rose 7% from a year earlier, the NBS data revealed.
By consumption types, from January to August, the retail sales of clothing, foot & head wear and knitted goods amounted to CNY 876 billion, growing by 10.6% year-on-year. In August alone, the retail sales were CNY 98.2 billion, up by 4.5% year-on-year.
