China’s Textile and Apparel Exports fell 3.8% in September

2024/10/21

According to data released by the General Administration of Customs, in US$-denominated terms, affected by the sluggish demand in overseas markets, the decline in the prosperity index of the global manufacturing sector, the appreciation of the renminbi, and other unfavorable factors, China’s textile and apparel exports in September fell 3.8% year-on-year and 11.3% month-on-month. Among them, textile exports decreased by 2.1%, and apparel exports fell by 5.1%.

In the first three quarters of this year, China’s textile and apparel exports totaled US$ 222.41 billion, up by 0.5% year-on-year. Among them, textile exports reached US$104.3 billion, seeing a year-on-year increase of 2.9%; apparel exports totaled US$ 118.11 billion, down by 1.6% year-on-year.

In CNY-denominated terms, from January to September, the cumulative exports of textile and apparel were 1.58 trillion yuan, up by 2.2% over the same period last year. Thereinto, textile exports totaled 741.71 billion yuan, seeing a year-on-year increase of 4.8%; apparel exports were 839.94 billion yuan, unchanged from last year. In September alone, textile and apparel exports reached 176.66 billion yuan, dropping by 6% year-on-year and 11.4% month-on-month. Among them, textile exports were 80.18 billion yuan, down by 4.4% year-on-year and 8% month-on-month; apparel exports reached 96.48 billion yuan, down 7.3% year-on-year and 14% month-on-month.

Looking ahead to the fourth quarter, unfavorable factors such as the unstable overseas demand recovery, trade protectionism, and geopolitics will remain. With the “base effect” further weakening, China’s textile and apparel export growth still faces greater challenges.
